How Long Does It Takes To Grind A Stump?

Jan 20, 2022

There are plenty of reasons why you might want to get rid of a tree stump on your property – stumps can be a haven for pests and fungi, and they are typically trip hazards and eyesores. With that in mind, it’s only natural that you would want a quick solution to any stump taking root in your yard. In this article, we will look at the factors which influence how long it takes to grind a problematic tree stump.

1. The stump’s strength

As you can imagine, the stump itself is always a significant piece of the puzzle. A large stump – either in terms of width or height – will naturally take longer to remove, even with the best equipment. On top of this, a hardwood tree stump, such as oak or maple, will be much more difficult to grind than a softwood stub, such as pine or cedar.

Conversely, rotting wood (hard or soft) will be easier to grind down due to the weaker integrity. If you do not know the type of tree on your property, your arborist will be able to identify it and help you obtain high-quality mulch from the grinding process.

2. DIY or professional?

Plenty of people decide to use tried-and-tested DIY techniques to grind down a tree stump; this can work out just fine for most but will be far more time consuming as a result. Professional arborists or tree grinders have the right tools to efficiently grind tree stumps, letting them complete the job quickly and with minimal hassle.

As part of this, they can also rapidly handle the clean-up process; expert arborists know to leave a garden just as they found it. They are used to doing this for every job, and they have refined this process to save you both the time and bother of dealing with this mess.

3. The stump’s location

Not every stump is conveniently in the middle of the garden with easy access for a worker or their equipment; some of them are out of the way. This will lead to an increase in the grind time to ensure a safe job, for example, if the tree stump has taken root next to a structure of any kind.

In this case, it will require a more precise grind to ensure there'll be no damage to any surrounding feature such as a power or water line. When there is more open space for an arborist to work, they'll be able to complete the grinding much quicker – and without much concern about accidentally hitting a gas main.

These are the major factors that can get in the way of a simple stump-grinding. The overall time may vary from fifteen minutes to several hours, based upon the strength of the wood and the ease of access.
