Differences Between High Quality & Low Quality Mulch?

Top-quality mulch consists of small chippings from trunks, roots and branches from trees that have a high level of nutritional value when they rot down, as well as the right consistency and texture to provide the aerated groundcover needed to reduce evaporation whilst ensuring that the soil doesn't become waterlogged.

Low-quality mulch is usually mulch that's made from trees that don't release a particularly high number of nutrients when they decompose. This reduces the nutrients going into the soil, potentially meaning that your plants will need additional fertiliser. Furthermore, low-grade mulch may contain a higher percentage of tiny particles of timber - these may compact, reducing aeration and therefore possibly increasing the chances of waterlogging.

This doesn't mean that low-quality mulch has no value, but if you're growing extremely delicate plants that are sensitive to adverse changes in their environment, you may wish to consider a mulch that more exactly mirrors the needs of your crops. Low-quality mulch works well for species such as pear trees, marsh marigolds, asparagus, leopard plants or pussy willow.

Mulch is Great for Ornamentation & Eliminating Weeds

One of the major benefits of mulch is that it provides an attractive ground-covering where the soil isn't being cultivated. Once the mulch is in place, weeds rarely grow through, ensuring a consistent service that can be easily decorated with some pots or tubs of plants if required. Particularly if you've got a large area that needs to be covered cheaply so that it remains weed-free and looks attractive, low-quality mulch can work really well.

Preserve Your Soil With Quality Mulch

Exposed soil is easily washed away during heavy rain or blown away if there is an arid period. If you're a gardener or landscaper who has a patch of fallow soil that you wish to protect from the weather for a few years before bringing it back into cultivation,  mulch is a cost-effective solution that will ensure the soil isn't compromised by exposure to the elements.

Mulch FAQs

  • Can I order mulch in advance?

Whilst we welcome expressions of interest for our mulch, unfortunately, it's not consistently available. We alert interested customers on a "first come, first served" basis when we've got some on offer. Availability largely depends on the type of trees we're grinding and/or removing as part of the other services that we provide.

  • Why do you offer mulch?

We are an environmentally friendly team that hates waste! Giving mulch away helps to ensure that every scrap of organic material we acquire is put to good use.
